I didn’t learn to swim until my final semester of college. The coach in charge of the class was wonderfully patient with me and I was the only non-swimmer in the class. I remember panicking the first time I went into the diving pool with the rest of the class. I was on one side of the pool (the 6’ depth) all by myself, clinging to the edge and treading water. The coach grabbed a safety float and dragged it along the edge so I could grab it if I needed to and walked with me as I swam, unaided, the whole length of the pool. When I finished, the entire class (all down at the 12’ end) applauded for me. It was an amazing day.

I got to go to the drive-in with my parents to see a double-feature: UP and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. It was my first time at the drive-in, though I was in my late teens/early twenties. When we were in line to enter, I crawled under a blanket in the back-seat because I wanted to sneak in even though 1. my parents paid for me and 2. (I think) the charge was per car and not per passenger. So, my first trip to the drive-in involved “sneaking in.”
